How to Crochet a Flower Motif –Free Pattern for Beginners

Crochet flowers and crochet hearts give me immense pleasure, making them our all-time favourite. They are simple, fast on hook. For today’s pattern, I thought of making a flower with heart-shaped petals.

The pattern is simple; no advance stitches included, the basic granny square stitches are used at the start and curved clusters in the last round to give the motif the heart shape. Perfect for beginners. One can use stash yarn for this project. Colour of the thread can be from self to multicolored. Total four numbers of round required to hook this pattern.

Recommend yarn thickness is 3ply and above, 2ply can be an option; the size of the motifs will be small, less than 2inches.

This pattern will suit to make bags, blankets, etc. The yarn or thread requirement will vary depending on the use. According to the hook size will vary.

Materials list required for making the Crochet Flower Motif

Cotton Thread 3ply or 4 ply

Steel Hook size 1.5 mm or 1.6mm 

Scissors

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Instruction for making the Crochet Flower Motif

Start the motif with a magic circle or ring

Round 1

Make a ch-3 tuning chain consider the same as 1 dc. For round 1 work 1 dc, ch3, Repeat 3dc,ch3 three times, to close the round 1 dc and sl st to the turning chain.

Round 2

Make a ch-3 tuning chain consider the same as 1 dc. Without any skip, make 3 dc (1dc over the previous round dc and 2 in the 3 chain space). Continue 3 ch, 7dc, repeat for 2 more times. For closing hook 3dc, sl st to the turning chain.

Round 3

Make a ch-3 tuning chain consider the same as 1 dc. Without any skip, make 4 dc (3dc over the previous round dc and 1 in the 3 chain space) ch 2, sl st in the 3 chain space. Continue ch 2 , 9dc, ch2, sl st. Repeat for 2 more times. For closing 4 dc, sl st to the turning chain.

Round 4

From the point of the closing of round 3, make an sc, skip 1dc and hook 3 dc, in the next dc hook 3dc skip 1 dc and sc, sl st through the ch 2 till you reach the next dc. Repeat skip 1dc, 3dc again 3dc in the next skip 1 dc sl st in next dc skip 1 dc, 3dc again 3dc in the next skip 1 dc sl st. Total 8 clusters.

Cut the remaining thread; sew with the help of a needle.

Blocking the Crochet Flower Motif

Using the finer thread of 2ply than you can use starch to give a stiff look to the mini motifs. In case you use high ply thread than the process of blocking can be skipped.
