Classic Granny Square Bookmark – Crochet Free Pattern

The granny square is the classic crochet motif, and it is often one of the first things that a person masters as they begin learning how to crochet. It is simple to do – and today on the occasion of International Granny Square Day I thought of doing something with the theme of granny square and my favorite thing is bookmark.

This Classic Granny Square Bookmark is worked in four color. It is crocheted in the round starting in the center and working outward from there. This is an intermediate crochet project that works up quickly. The size of each Motif is 1.8 “.

General Direction:

Using the Motif –

Unlike most crochet patterns, this pattern has no gauge, no thread requirement and no hook sizes.

That’s because you can vary the size and appearance of each motif to fit the needs of your project. If the motif is for a bedspread, you could choose size 5 cotton thread and an appropriate hook, the same motif could be made with size 10 cotton thread and a similar hook for a smaller motif like the one in this project.

When choosing the thread and hook for your project experiment with a variety of threads to achieve the appearance and texture that pleases you.

Supply List used for the Classic Granny Square Bookmark:

Yarn or Crochet Thread: You can use just about any size fiber to make this project. We have used Anchor Size 20…. Color used for this project is Green, Yellow, Blue, White.
Crochet Hook Size: To crochet the pattern, we used a size I.0 mm crochet hook.
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Special Abbreviation for Classic Granny Square Bookmark:

Beginning cluster (beg cl): ch 3 (count as first dc), holding back last lp of each st on hook, 4 dc in place indicating, yo, pull through all lps on hook.

Cluster (cl): Holding back last lp of each st on hook, 5 dc in place indicate, yo, pull through all lps on hook.

Details Instructions for the Classic Granny Square Bookmark:

Round 1 (Color – Yellow) –

Ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a ring, ch3 (count as first dc and ch 3), [dc in ring, ch 3] 7 times, join 3^rd ch of beg ch-3, Fasten off.

Round 2 (Color – Blue) –

Join next clour in any of ch sp, beg cl (refer special Abbreviations) in same ch sp, ch 3, in next ch sp ch 3 around, Repeat till there are 8 cluster total, beg cl, Fasten off.

Round 3 (Color – Green) –

Join next color in any ch sp, ch 3, *ch 5, sk next ch sp ** , (3 dc, ch3, 3dc) in next ch sp (corner) rep from * around, ending last rep st **, join in 3^rd ch of beg ch-3, Fasten off.

Round 4 (Color – White) –

Join Next color with sc in any corner ch sp, ch 3, sc in same corner ch sp, * ch 2, working over the ch -5 sp on last round, 7 dc in sk ch-3 sp on round 2, ch2 **, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ext corner ch sp, rep from * around ending last rep at **, join in beg sc, Fasten off.

For making the Bookmark make four nos. of the Classic Granny Square.

For Joining: You can sew the corners of during the Round 4 on corner of the motif can be joined to the second and then continue with the motif.

Decorate the Classic Granny Square Bookmark with a tassel.

What Can You Do With This Classic Granny Square?

· Use it as an establishment.

· Make several and join to make a fancy bag.

· Multiple motifs can be converted to table liner.

· Make use of thick yarn and convert the pattern to make pretty coasters.

· Make beautiful bed liners, crochet tops, etc.
